Erin Charpentier, B.S. 1995; M.S. 1997

Engineering Systems Administrator at a startup company funded by CMGI

Erin Charpentier received a B.S. degree in Mathematics with a Computer Science option. After four years of walking the fence between math and computer science, she decided to get her Master's degree in math. While in that program, she became more familiar with the UNIX operating system when she ran the math department's Silicon Graphics network. Having enjoyed UNIX system administration, Erin went into the good but volatile technical job market as a UNIX system administrator. Two years and three jobs later, she is still enjoying the varied tasks that system administration provides. "My math background has helped me greatly," Erin reports, "with both my problem solving and analytical skills. Deductive reasoning and problem solving are a part of nearly every day, as I deal with the 'It's broken!' problems that arise with hardware and software. Analytical skills also play a part, with data that is collected on the performance of both systems and software."
