Despite the weather, participants arrived energized with their supply of sharpened pencils and water bottles raring to showcase their calculating skills. Across the crowd were words of encouragement and even some high-fives with that ever important last minute coaching tip. MathCounts coach for Portsmouth Middle School, Ruth Larkin said, "these kids enthusiastically stay after school to practice and quiz each other, then many of them go off to play basketball or their many other activities." Along with several of the coaches, Larkin makes MathCounts an annual tradition.

Students participated individually and as teams. The individual overall 1st place Seacoast Champion for 2007 is Gubby Noronha, a home schooler who competes with Oyster River School. When asked why he thinks Math is cool, Gabby said, "I can apply it to everything I do and it's fun to solve those harder problems that a lot of people give up on. I especially like getting around others who like math and having this kind of competition."

Winners from the 2007 Seacoast Regional MathCounts competition will go on to compete in the New Hampshire state competition this March 10.
