What do mechanical engineers do?

Mechanical engineers design, develop, build and maintain the tools and products of our technological society. Mechanical design involves all types of mechanical motion, ranging from a small and complex high-speed machine such as a printer to the flaps and other control surfaces on a large airplane wing. Another division of mechanical engineering is energy generation and conversion, with diverse applications from gas turbine and rocket engines to environmental control of building interiors. Other related subject areas are the material sciences and control systems.
