QUESTIONS ABOUT COURSES

  1. How can I drop/add a course? Consult your faculty advisor first. Forms are available in department offices. You are responsible for making sure that the form is delivered to the Registrar's Office by the published deadlines.
  2. Deadlines for dropping/adding courses?The add period begins on the first day of classes and ends on the third Friday after classes begin. You have until the fifth Friday after classes begin to drop classes. See

  3. Are there any special dates or conditions for dropping/adding courses?
    Mathematics: Begins the afternoon of the first day of classes in the Math Office, Kingsbury W383
    Chemistry: For Chem 403 & 405 see Amy Lindsay in Parsons G110A.
    Physics:  Check with the Physics department in DeMeritt for add/drop
  4. Do I need approval for courses to be taken at other universities and colleges?
    1) Discuss selection with your faculty advisor.
    2) Obtain Transfer Prior Approval Forms: available in Registrar's Office & CEPS Student Affairs Office.
    3) Obtain course description. 4) Obtain all signatures. Form should be submitted prior to taking the course. 
  5. What are the conditions for repeating courses?Some departments may have restrictions on number of repeats. The latest grade replaces the previous grade, even if it is a lower grade. See Students Rights & Rules Booklet.
  6. What if I am not doing well in a course?Seek help. Contact

  7. What if I have concerns about a course? Talk to

  8. What does it mean to audit a course? Auditing means to take a course without receiving credit.  The instructor must grant approval and may require specific work.  See Students Rights & Rules Booklet.

QUESTIONS ABOUT CLASS ATTENDANCE

 

  1. What if I am sick (illness for 5 or more days)? Contact the CEPS Academic Affairs Office and your faculty advisor. *Contact the faculty members teaching the courses as soon as possible.
  2. What if I need an excused absence from class? Student should see faculty member teaching the course prior to class if possible. Consequences are at the discretion of faculty member.  See Students Rights & Rules Booklet.
  3. What happens if I have excessive absences from class? This may result in a grade of AF (administrative failure).  You must see the instructor or Associate Dean.  See Students Rights & Rules Booklet.

 

QUESTIONS ABOUT ACADEMICS

 

  1. Who receives progress reports? Freshmen and new transfer students receive evaluations of class work from each instructor during the mid-semester in the first two semesters only. The reports go to your Granite Square Station mailbox. 
  2. What if there are discrepancies in the mid-semester course audit? Any discrepancies should be reported to the Registrar's Office.
  3. Petitioning for Course or Program Variances? Petitions for Variance in Academic Policies are available in the CEPS Academic Affairs Office (Kingsbury W283) or in departmental offices.
  4. Withdrawing from UNH? It is best to discuss this with your faculty advisor and then submit a withdrawal form to the Registrar's Office.  Students must reapply to return to UNH. See Students Rights & Rules Booklet.
  5. How do I apply for a Leave of Absence? You must have a GPA of 2.5 or better before beginning the paperwork. See Students Rights & Rules Booklet.
  6. How do I waive Program Requirements? Begin the process by speaking with your faculty advisor.  See Students Rights & Rules Booklet.
  7. Cheating? See Students Rights & Rules Booklet.
  8. Medical Withdrawal? Contact Residential Life - 2-2268.
  9. Who receives a Scholastic Warning? If a student’s semester GPA or cumulative GPA is less than 2.0, a “scholastic warning” is printed on his/her semester grade report. Students should meet with their major advisors to discuss the situation. UNH does not have “academic probation.”
  10. Can I be suspended without receiving a warning?Yes. If at any time a student’s cumulative GPA falls below a certain value, he/she will be suspended. Students who wish to appeal this decision should meet with their major advisor before doing so. See Students Rights & Rules Booklet.
  11. What are Academic Actions?A student can be excluded, suspended or dismissed based on academic performance. See Student Rights & Rules Booklet.

DEGREE QUESTIONS

 

  1.  How can I change my major or declare a major?
    1. Talk to someone in the department to which you wish to transfer. Some colleges/ majors may require that you take specific courses before you’ll be considered.
    2. Consult with your faculty advisor. 
    3. Obtain a Change of Program Form from the Academic Affairs Office.
  2. Dual Degrees or Second Major? Consult with the department of each major or degree for specific requirements and restrictions.
  3. What is a UNH minor? Typically you need 20 credits of study in an area outside of your major.  Consult with your faculty advisor for approval.
  4. CEPS Minors? Refer to “Interdisciplinary Minors” in the Undergraduate Catalog.  Also see "Programs of Study" beneath “CEPS Curriculum.”
  5. Who is a full time student?You must carry at least 12 or more credits (a typical load is ~16 credits).
  6. Can courses in my major be used to satisfy General Education Requirements? Sometimes.  Consult with your faculty advisor or the CEPS Academic Affairs Office.
  7. What are the requirements for Graduation? There are departmental, college and university requirements.  Students are responsible for working with their advisors to ensure that they are meeting all necessary requirements for graduation. Refer to the Undergraduate Catalog (for the year that you entered your major) and speak with academic advisors for more information.

 

SCHOLARSHIP QUESTIONS

 

  1. What is the Dean’s Scholarship? It is awarded by the Office of Admissions to deserving students for a maximum of 8 semesters.
  2. Maintaining a Dean's Scholarship? You must maintain a GPA of 3.0 from the end of sophomore year through senior year.  If you change colleges within UNH and hope to retain your scholarship, you must submit a petition to your new college.
  3. What scholarships are available for CEPS students? A list is available on the CEPS Web site. Students must fill out the general scholarship form available in the CEPS Academic Affairs Office or online at: http://www.ceps.unh.edu/academics/scholarships.html Look for it in December.

CEPS gave out over $370,000 for 2009-2010, which includes over $35,000 to incoming freshmen.

Classrooms and Lectures halls are state-of-the-art. 

 

 

  GENERAL QUESTIONS

 

  1. Where can I buy my books? You can buy your books at the UNH Campus Bookstore, order them on-line or get them at the Durham Book Exchange in town.  Refrain from writing in your books and save your sales receipts in the event that you want to exchange them.
  2. Does CEPS have any Foreign Study Programs?Students may spend a semester (usually junior year) in Budapest or Scotland.  More information is available at http://www.ceps.unh.edu/academics/study_abroad.html.
