Environmental Engineering Careers
What do environmental engineers do?
Environmental engineers are the technical professionals who identify and design solutions for environmental problems. They work to provide safe drinking water, treat and properly dispose of wastes, maintain air quality, control water pollution, remediate sites contaminated by spills or improper disposal, and modify industrial processes for pollution prevention. The environmental engineer is trained to lead the multidisciplinary teams needed to solve complex environmental problems. At UNH, students can choose between degrees emphasizing industrial processes or municipal processes.
Job outlook and earnings
Click here to visit the National Bureau of Labor Statistics (NBLS) page on engineering. Since there is no NBLS page strictly for environmental engineering, you may wish to visit the Bureau's page on chemical engineering (for industrial processes) or civil engineering (for municipal processes).
Environmental engineers work in many places. Some of the common ones are:
- Engineering consulting firms that design and construct air and water pollution-control systems
- Industries that need to treat their wastewater or air discharges
- Companies that treat and dispose of hazardous chemicals
- Government agencies that monitor and regulate waste discharges
- Universities and colleges that teach, and conduct research on, environmental control
- private and government laboratories that develop new generations of pollution-control systems
- International agencies that transfer knowledge and technology to developing countries
- Public-interest groups that advocate environmental protection
