Program Description:
While sustainable development is based on social and economic responsibility, the presentation will focus on key environmental aspects related to the paper industry: sustainable forestry, energy & emissions, and the best use of recycled fiber. Laura will briefly review her career path which led from a senior year project at UNH on the biomethanation of wastewater (under the direction of Prof. Farag) through a series of jobs ultimately landing as the Director of Sustainable Development at Sappi Fine Paper North America.

Speaker Bio:
Laura has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of New
Hampshire (class of ’88) and an M.S. and PhD in Paper Science from
the Institute of Paper Science and Technology. Since 1995, she has held
a variety of positions within the paper industry including R&D, mill
environmental, product development for specialties and coated fine paper,
and most recently sustainability. Since joining Sappi in 2006, Laura has
quickly emerged as an industry leader in the field of sustainable development.
