About Industry Scholarships AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF CHEMISTS AWARD
The American Institute of Chemists Award goes to the top-ranking senior in chemical engineering.
APPLEDORE ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP
Nearly two-thirds of Appledore Engineering's staff of engineers are UNH graduates. Impressed with their training, the Portsmouth company has established two annual scholarships to support the UNH civil engineering department. Recipients of these scholarships are civil engineering seniors chosen in part for their excellent grades and community service, their interest in either site planning and design or ocean and waterfront engineering, and essays they've written on their goals in the field of civil engineering.
BASSETT SCHOLARSHIP
Gordon Bassett received a B.S. in chemistry from UNH in 1936. The fund established in his name provides financial assistance to full-time students in chemistry or chemical engineering.
CAPITAL MINERAL CLUB FIELD SCHOLARSHIP
The Capital Mineral Club Field Scholarship was established in 1988 by members of the Capital Mineral Club of Concord, New Hampshire. The scholarships provide financial assistance to students in the Department of Earth Sciences who wish to attend field camp. Preference is given to New Hampshire residents and the names of recipients are inscribed on the field scholarship plaque in James Hall, Room 124.
CASH-BRYSON SCHOLARSHIP
The Cash-Bryson Scholarship was created by August and Esther Joyce Bryson Cash in honor of their parents, John and Mary Cash and Joseph and Agnes Bryson. The scholarship provides financial assistance to an undergraduate student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
WILLIAM H. CHAMPLIN, JR. SCHOLARSHIP
In 1954, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Champlin, Jr. established this scholarship to aid students majoring in Mechanical Engineering. This scholarship is awarded to juniors and preference is given to those who show interest in the study and advancement of aeronautics.
CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT AWARD
This award is made by the department to an undergraduate in recognition of academic achievement and service to the chemical engineering professional community.
CIVIL ENGINEERING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The Civil Engineering Achievement Award is made by the department to graduating seniors in recognition of academic achievement in civil engineering coursework and service to the civil engineering professional community.
CIVIL ENGINEERING GRADUATE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The Civil Engineering Student Achievement Award is made by the department to a graduate student in recognition of outstanding scholarship.
CIVIL ENGINEERING SERVICE AWARD
The Civil Engineering Student Service Award is made by the department to an undergraduate who has performed outstanding service to the civil engineering professional community.
CEPS ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP
The Alumni Scholarship Fund is generated through the annual giving of UNH Alumni. Students are selected based on their academic performance and merit, as well as demonstrating outstanding service by participating in community service or outreach projects. Each department recommends a student to be considered for this award.
CEPS INDUSTRIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Fifty businesses, military, and government employers who attended the college's annual engineering job fair voluntarily contributed to a scholarship fund. This scholarship goes to a student of academic merit in the college who has not yet declared a major.
COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD
This award recognizes a computer science senior who has demonstrated strong leadership within the department through participation in professional activities.
HOWARD W. COPE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Howard W. Cope Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in his memory by a number of his friends. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1950 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. This scholarship is awarded to married undergraduate students or students who are single parents who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and personal leadership.
ELMER F. CUTTS AND MARION MITCHELL CUTTS 1916 SCHOLARSHIP
The Elmer F. Cutts and Marion Mitchell Cutts Scholarship was established with the distribution from the estate of Marion Edwina Mitchell Cutts, Class of 1916, and Elmer F. Cutts, Class of 1917, to provide financial assistance annually to students of outstanding ability and good morals who are enrolled in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
MIKE AND BEA DALTON SCHOLARSHIP
Michael Dalton earned a degree in electrical engineering from the university in 1964. He and his wife, Bea Worden Dalton, have established a fund to provide merit scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students in engineering and physical sciences.
GLENICE DEARBORN SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is funded by a bequest from Glenice Dearborn Fluery, medical technology 1954, who had a successful career as a metallurgist at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft. The award is made to undergraduate students of academic merit in the college.
W. EDWARDS DEMING SCHOLARSHIP
The Deming scholarship was established in 1983 to honor W. Edwards Deming, a world-renowned statistician known for his work in quality control and quality management. During his lifetime, Dr. Deming worked tirelessly in the U.S. and abroad, teaching methods and concepts to help industry produce high-quality products and services. The Deming scholarship is made to a mathematics student who has achieved high academic excellence in statistics.
EDWARD T. DONOVAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Edward T. Donovan was a faculty member in the Mechanical Engineering Department from 1926 to 1968 and served as Acting Dean between 1955 and 1959. This scholarship was established in 1974 with gifts from family, friends and former students. The recipient is selected on the basis of high scholastic achievement and contributions to the Mechanical Engineering Department, the profession, and the University community.
EARTH SCIENCES MEMORIAL FIELD SCHOLARSHIP
The Memorial Field Scholarship is funded by alumni and friends who have made contributions in recognition of past department faculty who have made a difference in their lives (George White, Ralph Meyers, Bob Davis, Glenn Stewart, Linc Page). The scholarship is used to defray expenses incurred in attending field camp. Recipients' names are inscribed on the scholarship plaque in James Hall, Room 124.
ELECTRICAL MANUFACTURING AND COIL WINDING ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP
The Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Scholarship provides financial assistance to students and encourages them to consider a career in the electrical manufacturing industry.
ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The Environmental Engineering Academic Achievement Award is made by the program to graduating seniors in recognition of academic achievement in environmental engineering coursework and service to the environmental engineering professional community.
HARRY L. FARNHAM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In 1973, Mrs. Harry L. Farnham established a scholarship in memory of her husband, a prominent Dover businessman who graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1915 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Preference is given to students planning a career in electrical engineering.
JOSEPH L. FEARER SCHOLARSHIP
Joseph L. Fearer graduated from UNH in 1931 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Income from his donations to the university has been providing awards since 1947. Recipients must be New Hampshire residents with high scholastic standing in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
GEORGE F. AND LINA C. FISHER SCHOLARSHIP
George Fisher, a 1950 graduate of the university, became a prominent engineer, executive, and company-founder in the area of piezoelectric devices. The George and Lina Fisher fund provides financial assistance to undergraduate or graduate students at the university within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
MAVIS HOWARD FOSTER SCHOLARSHIP
The Mavis Howard Foster Scholarships are awarded to students in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement. The recipients are selected by the College and must be New Hampshire residents.
DONALD FOX MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Donald Fox, a Far East Regional Sales Manager for Hollis Automation of Nashua, died in an air liner accident in 1985. Friends, associates and family established this scholarship to be awarded to New England residents, preferably from New Hampshire, who are in good academic standing.
CHARLIE GEORGE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In 1983 Charlie George, President of Northern New England Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. was killed in an automobile accident. This memorial scholarship was established by friends and members of Associated Builders Corporation to assist civil engineering students interested in a construction career.
EDWARD L. AND ALICE FORBES GETCHELL SCHOLARSHIP
Edward Leonard "Ned" Getchell joined the UNH faculty as an instructor in 1916, becoming a Full Professor in 1944. He served as Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 1946 to 1953. His was a lifetime of service as a dedicated, skilled and caring teacher. The Getchell Scholarship provides financial support to undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. The recipients must be graduates of New Hampshire high schools and must demonstrate academic merit and service to their community.
GRANITE STATE ROOST EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
The major objective of the Granite State Roost (GSR) scholarship program is to assist in the education of students in engineering and science disciplines, who are likely to pursue careers in electronic defense and related professions. This scholarship goes to a junior or senior who is enrolled in ROTC or has served in the U.S. military. Student's whose parents are veterans may be considered. The student must also be from New Hampshire., Maine or Vermont.
OLIVETTE HEMON SCHOLARSHIP
The late Olivette Hemon was a UNH graduate in the late 1940's. She worked as a draftsperson for the U.S. Government. She established a scholarship fund to provide financial assistance each year to a "hard working and deserving senior female" majoring in mechanical engineering.
KENNETH J. HIGSON SCHOLARSHIP
Kenneth J. Higson, a member of the University of New Hampshire class of 1948, established a fund to award scholarships to University undergraduate students majoring in Mechanical Engineering, with particular attention to students of academic promise and performance.
LEON W. HITCHCOCK SCHOLARSHIP
Leon Hitchcock served the Department of Electrical Engineering from 1910 to 1956. He was Head of the Department from 1921 to 1952 and Acting Dean of the College of Technology from 1940 to 1945. He was thought of by his students as a kind and gentle friend. Funds for this award have been provided by alumni, faculty, and friends of the department in memory of Professor Hitchcock. The award is given to an outstanding junior in the department.
BARBARA G. HOUSTON SCHOLARSHIP
The Barbara G. Houston Mathematics Education Scholarship is presented to the junior mathematics major, preferably from New Hampshire, who best exemplifies the qualities of interest, enthusiasm and potential in the discipline of mathematics education. The recipient is selected by the mathematics education faculty.
ROBERT E. HOUSTON JR. SCHOLARSHIP
Professor Houston, who taught in the UNH physics department for 33 years, established this award. The Robert E. Houston Jr. Scholarship is presented to the junior physics major, preferably from New Hampshire, who best exemplifies the qualities of interest, enthusiasm, and potential in the discipline of physics. The recipient is selected by the physics faculty.
FRED G. AND GERTRUDE A. HOWELL SCHOLARSHIP
Fred G. Howell graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1935 with a degree in chemistry and worked in spectroscopy for the military, where he met Gertrude. The Fred G. and Gertrude A. Howell Scholarship was created to provide support for undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Support is limited to tuition, books, conferences, and equipment.
LEROY F. JOHNSON SCHOLARSHIP
The Leroy F. Johnson Scholarship was established by the bequest of Marion Johnson in memory of her husband. Awards are made to students who are either entering, or currently enrolled in civil engineering. Recipients must be residents of Manchester, NH, and graduates of Manchester schools.
ROBERT CARROLL KIMBALL SCHOLARSHIP
After graduating from the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences in 1954, he was employed as an engineer at Hercules, Inc., of Radford, Virginia, for 33 years. The Robert Carroll Kimball Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in his memory with gifts from family and friends.
ALBERT KINGSBURY MEMORIAL AWARD
In 1950, the class of 1899, in cooperation with students and friends, contributed to a fund in memory of Albert Kingsbury, an inventor and former professor in mechanical engineering. This award is made annually to a senior in mechanical engineering.
WILLIAM E. KNOX MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
William E. Knox received an electrical engineering degree from UNH in 1922. A scholarship fund was established in his name in 1981 by Mrs. William E. Knox of Jamesburg, NJ. The scholarships, based partly on academic merit, are awarded to students in electrical engineering.
RAYMOND M. KRAINSKI SCHOLARSHIPS
Judith Feeny established the Raymond M. Krainski Scholarship Fund in memory of her brother, who graduated from the university in 1986 with a degree in civil engineering. Mr. Krainski worked as a town engineer for several communities in Ohio. The scholarship is designed to help students who, like Raymond Krainski, continue their education after several years in the workforce. Based partly on academic merit, the scholarship is awarded to a non-traditional student in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or computer engineering.
MARIE LOUISE LANGELIER SCHOLARSHIP
In 1980, Wilfred F. Langelier of Oakland, California, established a Charitable Annuity Trust Agreement with the university in memory of his wife. Awards are made to undergraduate students, preferably from New England, who are concentrating in chemistry, environmental engineering, or chemical engineering.
WILLIAM S. LAW SCHOLARSHIP
William S. Law, a 1934 graduate of UNH, established a scholarship fund to assist the university in offering a high quality education to its undergraduate engineering students.
JAMES LEITZEL AWARD
The James R.C. Leitzel Award is made to an outstanding mathematics undergraduate. It is funded by the mathematics faculty in honor of their late colleague, Professor James Leitzel, who was nationally known for his expertise in mathematics scholarship.
S. ROBERT LEVINE AND CRAIG R. BENSON TECHNOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP
Established in honor of its founders by Cabletron Systems Inc.(now Enterasys Networks Inc.), the S. Robert Levine and Craig R. Benson Technology Scholarship provides scholarship support for undergraduate students studying computer science or another computer technology-related field. Awards are based on academic merit, with preference to students from New Hampshire with financial need.

JOHN AND ROSE MENDELSOHN KURTZ SCHOLARSHIP
Herman M. Kurtz established the John and Rose Mendelsohn Kurtz Endowed Scholarship in memory of his parents. This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences who exhibit exceptional scholarship and leadership abilities.
ALICE MARGARETTE MITCHELL SCHOLARSHIP
The Alice Margarette Mitchell Scholarship was established by Marion Mitchell Cutts in memory of her sister, Alice Margarette Mitchell. The recipients of this award are selected by the faculty in the Marine Sciences Program.
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION SCHOLARSHIP
The National Association of Women in Contruction Scholarship is awarded to a student entering her junior or senior year in college with an interest in a construction related field.
NATIONAL PRIME USERS GROUP SCHOLARSHIP
The Board of Directors of NPUG, in recognition of the positive contributions made to its organization by the UNH Department of Research Computing, established the National Prime Users Group Endowed Scholarship at UNH. This scholarship is available to students in Computer Science and Electrical & Computer Engineering.
NH PUBLIC WORKS AND MUNICIPAL ENGINEERING ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP
The New Hampshire Public Works and Municipal Engineering Association Scholarship goes to a deserving junior with a major in civil engineering.
DONALD O'BRIEN FUND
The Donald G. O'Brien Fund was established at the University of New Hampshire through the generosity of Donald G. O'Brien. The purpose of the fund is to encourage undergraduate students in CEPS to pursue liberal arts studies as part of their curriculum. Typical expenditures are for scholarships, course development, travel grants, and planning grants.
DONALD F. OTHMER ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARD
The Donald F. Othmer Academic Excellence Award recognizes the scholastic achievements of the chemical engineering junior who has attained the highest scholastic rating during the freshman and sophomore years. The recipient receives an American Institute of Chemical Engineers Award consisting of a certificate of recognition and a copy of the Chemical Engineering Handbook.
DR. RUTH PETERS MEMORIAL AWARD
In 1964, Dr. Mary Fieser established an award in memory of her sister, Dr. Ruth Peters, who had taught mathematics at UNH. One of Dr. Peters' prime interests was discovering outstanding students and encouraging their development. This award is made to a student majoring in mathematics who has a deep interest in mathematics and shows signs of creativity.
PHYSICS ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
This award is made by the department to an undergraduate in recognition of academic achievement and service to the physics professional community.
PI MU EPSILON AWARD
Pi Mu Epsilon is the national collegiate mathematics honor society which recognizes academic excellence in all fields of mathematics. In their efforts to increase interest in and awareness of mathematics, the members of our local chapter have established a scholarship to recognize first- or second-year students who demonstrate dedication and interest in mathematics. This year's recipients are recognized by the mathematics faculty as showing outstanding promise in their studies.
PSNH SCHOLARSHIP
PSNH established this program to provide renewable financial assistance and summer internships for students (sophomores or juniors) in civil, electrical or mechanical engineering. The award is based on academic standing as well as a PSNH Scholarship essay and elligible majors may change from year to year.
RICHARD N. ST. ONGE PHYSICS AWARD
In 1968, the physics faculty established an award to recognize the outstanding student in Physics 407-408. In 1975, the award was renamed to honor Dr. Richard St. Onge, a faculty member of the Physics Department, who had taught physics 407-408 in a creative and intellectually stimulating way for many years.
STEPHEN M. SAWYER MEMORIAL AWARD
The Stephen M. Sawyer Memorial Award is presented to a junior or senior Civil Engineering major who, in the opinion of the faculty, has demonstrated outstanding skills in applying computers or computer methods to civil engineering problems. The award is named for the late Stephen M. Sawyer, B.S. '91, M.S. '94.
SFC ENGINEERING COMPANY SCHOLARSHIP
SFC Engineering Partnership, Inc. is a multi-disciplinary engineering and land surveying firm headquartered in Manchester, NH. The firm and the employees are proactive in the engineering community. With this in mind SFC has established a scholarship program specifically for students enrolled in UNH's Civil Engineering Program.
JOHN H. SMITH SCHOLARSHIP
John H. Smith received a UNH degree in mechanical engineering in 1950. He is the founder and owner of Portland Valve Incorporated, a company that designs and manufactures valves for nuclear submarines. Mr. Smith has established a fund that provides scholarships to undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
LUTHER AND RUTH CROSS SHATTERLY SCHOLARSHIP
Ruth Cross Shatterly, a 1941 graduate of the university, has established a scholarship fund in memory of her father, George G. Cross, Sr., a former electrical engineer. The scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to students in mechanical engineering or civil engineering.
SHUTTLEWORTH SCHOLARSHIP
Clarence G. Shuttleworth received a chemical engineering degree from the university in 1923. He and his wife Eleanor endowed a scholarship fund to provide financial support for chemical engineering students working on research or other projects.
SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MILITARY ENGINEERS SCHOLARSHIP, NEW YORK POST
The Society of American Military Engineers Scholarship was established in 1973 for undergraduate engineering majors. An award is made annually to an undergraduate student majoring in any of the engineering disciplines.
SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MILITARY ENGINEERS SCHOLARSHIP, BOSTON POST
Students from environmental and civil engineering are encouraged to apply for this scholarship by writing an essay. The students are interviewed by a Board of Directors from the Society before a selection is made.
RICHARD N. ST. ONGE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Dana Schow, who received physics degrees from UNH in 1962 & '67, has established a scholarship fund in fond memory of Dr. Richard Norbert St. Onge, UNH physics professor. Mr. Schow remembers Dr. St. Onge as a brilliant, creative, talented, high-energy physicist who was beloved by students and staff alike. The scholarship provides financial assistance to undergraduate physics students of academic merit.
SOCIETY OF WOMEN ENGINEERS - BOSTON
The Boston Section of SWE occasionally awards a one-time scholarship to a female junior or senior student studying in a field of engineering. Not offered every year.
EDWARD STOLWORTHY SCHOLARSHIP
E. Howard Stolworthy devoted over 60 years of service to the University of New Hampshire, 46 of these years as a faculty member in the Mechanical Engineering Department. In 1985, Professor Stolworthy established a scholarship to aid any student in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences who had shown a desire to further the interests of the College.
GEORGE A. TAFT SCHOLARSHIP
George Taft received UNH electrical engineering degrees in 1965 and '68 and went on to have a long and successful career as an executive with Sanders and Lockheed Martin. A scholarship in his memory was established by his wife, Linda, and children Michael and Jennifer, all graduates of UNH. The scholarship provides financial assistance to electrical engineering students of high academic standing.
TAU BETA PI OUTSTANDING JUNIOR AWARD
The Tau Beta Pi Outstanding Junior Award is given to top-ranking juniors in any of the four engineering departments who also excel outside of the academic realm. These awards were created by the University of New Hampshire's Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, a national engineering honor society, to encourage academic excellence.
TAU BETA PI SOPHOMORE AWARD
Tau Beta Pi is the national collegiate honor society that recognizes excellence in all fields of engineering. The Tau Beta Pi Sophomore Award goes to a sophomore whose academic standing in his or her freshman year was superlative.
TECH ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The Tech Alumni Achievement Awards were established in 1978. Each department in the College selects one of its students who, in the opinion of the faculty, has demonstrated the qualities of scholarship, leadership and creativity in their professional field.
TECHNICAL ASSOCIATION OF THE PULP AND PAPER INDUSTRY, LOCAL SECTION SCHOLARSHIP
The Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Institute is a national organization related to the paper industry with a number of Student Chapters located in U.S. universities. The Maine-New Hampshire Chapter of the TAPPI has established an endowment fund at UNH to provide scholarships to students in chemical engineering for academic and extracurricular achievements and for involvement in the student TAPPI Chapter.
FREDERICK WAITE SCHOLARSHIPS
Frederick Waite was a graduate of the class of 1927 in Chemistry. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide assistance to an undergraduate student entering his or her junior or senior year of study in chemical engineering.
FREDERICK N. WALKER, JR. SCHOLARSHIP
Frederick N. Walker, Jr., was a graduate of the Class of 1933 in electrical engineering and a retired lieutenant colonel from the U.S. Air Force. Upon his death in 1995, his bequest established scholarships in his name for fostering the education of students in the Department of Electrical Engineering.
WILLIAM WEAVER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
William H. Weaver graduated from UNH in 1963 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and went on to earn an M.S. in Sanitary Engineering from Harvard University in 1964. He was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Construction Battalion. At the time of his death in 1967, he was Vice President of the Weaver Brothers Construction Company in Concord, New Hampshire. His friends and colleagues in the New Hampshire Good Roads Association established a scholarship fund in his name. The scholarships are designed to aid Civil Engineering students with an interest in highway-related fields.
WINCHESTER R. WOOD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Winchester R. Wood Book Award was established in 1969 by family and friends of Winchester R. Wood (Class of '30) for the purpose of purchasing books. In 1972 the award was changed to a memorial scholarship awarded annually to outstanding engineering students.
DOUGLAS R. WOODWARD SCHOLARSHIP
In 1934 Douglas R. Woodward earned his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University. He enjoyed a career as a water resource engineer with the U.S. Geological Survey, as well as a career in public office that included serving in the NH House of Representatives from 1982 to 1986. Mr. Woodward wishes to perpetuate the educational opportunities available to students, as he too was helped by the College at a critical time in his life.
JOHN B. AND MARTHA M.W. ZOCCHI SCHOLARSHIP
John Bernard Zocchi, Jr., who already had an engineering education provided through military experience, earned a bachelor's degree in business in 1949 and a master's in economics in 1954 from UNH. Always using his engineering background, Mr. Zocchi had a successful career working for General Electric and eventually established his own business, Insul-Tab, Inc., in Woburn, Massachusetts. After the death of his first wife, John married Martha Maria Wolfram Zocchi. Mrs. Zocchi received her bachelor's degree as a nontraditional student and values the accessibility of public education. The Zocchis share a deep commitment to higher education and wish to provide financial support to students who have the ability to succeed.
